Artist Name:

Rachel Ramirez

Artist Biography:

Hello! I am a local artist here from the Permian Basin. My name is Rachel Ramirez and I am an Artistmother. I combine the two words together because art to me is what wakes my brain every day and my family, well, are my heart. I cannot live without my brain or my heart. Those are two things I must balance I could not just pick one over the other. I am married with three boys and reside in a little city in the middle of nowhere Texas called Midland. I have been painting professionally for about 12 years and have been incorporating desert aesthetics in my paintings for the past 8 years. I graduated with a BFA in 2007 and received my EC-12 teacher's certification in 2008. I have done various group shows and have works purchased by private collectors and vendors all over the state of Texas.

Description of Artwork:

The portraits I paint represent, of course, a part of me, but mainly what they represent is where I'm from and the rough desert splendor that surrounds this area. I choose cacti a lot in my work for their resilience. And I turn it into a crown sort of as a symbol of nobility and a rite of passage. I think anything that can survive in the desert is resilient, whether it's the plants, the animals, the people, we're all a part of this rough desert grandeur. I find inspiration in the things around me and my environment. My perception of where Iā€™m from is rough, rugged, and vast. The winds blow hot and the ground beneath your feet is even hotter. But there is some unique beauty here that you cannot find anywhere else in the world. The desert can be unforgiving but at the same time her beauty is without a doubt evident as far as the eye can see. It goes on forever. From the endless sunsets to the majestic night skies. The desert is where I'm from and it's what I know.
